Our Review Factors
What were the key considerations we set for reviewing the pickles by Home Food Studio?
The flavor and texture of the pickles were the prime aspects we evaluated. We have briefly discussed all the details below:
1. Flavor
Achaar, also known as Indian pickle, is a complex tapestry of flavors made by preserving fruits or vegetables in a mixture of oil, salt, and spices. For each flavor we reviewed, we focused on these key aspects:
- The balance of seasoning: Is the blend of spices used well balanced? Is there any particular spice that overpowers the other? Sourness and spice levels were checked as well.
- Flavor tags: Do the actual flavors synchronize with the labels?
- Freshness
2. Texture
We examined the texture, focusing on the following factors:
- The size and cut of the vegetable/fruit: The bite of the vegetable/fruit is crucial too. How are the vegetables/fruit cut? Large chunks or small bits? Are the pieces too mushy? Do they retain a bite?
- Ratio of the pieces to the masala: All the pieces of vegetable/fruit should be adequately coated with the masala. What about the quality and quantity of oil?
3. Other Factors
Ingredients
What is the quality of the ingredients? Which type of oil is used as the base? Are any preservatives or added flavors included?
We also documented details about the product’s cost, packaging, and expiration date.

A Little About Home Food Studio Pickles
Delhi winters, a line of martabans on the terrace and lots of flavor!
The Pickle Shop by Home Food Studio brings a delightful taste of tradition to our tables. With roots in Delhi, Anupama has a deep appreciation for the vibrant culinary culture that the city is known for, particularly in areas like Delhi 6.
This passion for authentic, homemade pickles inspired Anupama to revive a dying art form and share it with the world. Based in Mumbai, Anupama has curated a collection of pickles that reflect her heritage and love for Delhi food.
These pickles have a clean ingredient list that is free from preservatives and artificial flavors, which is a big plus, considering that many commercial pickles are often filled with additives, flavorings, and artificial colors.
How We Tried Them?
We tried these pickles via two ways:
- As is
- with everyday meals like dal-chawal and parathas.
1. Bharwan Lal Mirchi
Our Verdict
The aroma of this pickle is a major highlight. It smells super fresh and enticing.
Moving on, the primary flavor in this pickle comes from the robust masala and the heat of the red chili peppers. The spice mixture offers a well-balanced tanginess and the complexity of the spices like turmeric, fennel, and carom seeds adds a nice depth, making each bite more than just spicy.
Another commendable aspect is the texture of the chili peppers. The skins are not too thick, and after the pickling process, the peppers soften to a perfect, tender consistency. Unlike many other pickles, this one isn’t drenched in oil, which we loved.
In other words, there is just enough oil to bring the spices together, adding a mild mustard-like pungency without making the pickle greasy.

2. Heeng-Wala Aam Achaar
Our Verdict
Texture-wise, the mango pieces are perfectly cut, ensuring an even distribution of flavors and a satisfying bite. The blend of salt and hing (asafoetida) is well-balanced here.
Having said that, the sulfuric pungency of hing is irresistibly inviting. The absence of oil is another notable feature of this pickle.
All in all, the achar’s fresh, homemade flavors truly shine through, providing an authentic taste experience.

It is perfect for individuals who prefer mildly spiced pickles with a distinct flavor of hing.
Special mention for some other pickles offered by the brand:
- Katpati Chatpati Achaar: This is one of their best sellers, and rightly so. This is an extremely homestyle mango pickle.
- Chilli and Garlic Achaar: This has a taste that is closest to that of a homemade achaar. The soft garlic cloves and the rough cuts of red and green chilli make this pickle absolutely irresistable.
