The festival season in India has now truly and officially begun. From Rakhi, all the way till Holi next year, we will have reasons to celebrate almost every week. Diwali, which is one of India’s biggest celebrations sees families indulge in days of happiness and festive cheer. Gifting is also a big part of Diwali, and no one coming to your home this year for Diwali is likely to turn up ‘khaali-haath‘. There are always ladoos, barfis, chocolates or hampers to be gifted and received.

This year, at Mishry we are looking at easy to gift, away from the usual, reasonable gifting options that you can even buy in bigger numbers. Our recommendations are authentic; as always, we experience (try/fry/taste) the products ourselves, at our review lab, before making any recommendations to you.

There is nothing like a fresh batch of gulab jamuns, hot off the frying pan and dunked into a sugar syrup.

A good quality gulab jamun should have many things working for it. The dumplings should be soft on the inside, but not so much on the outside. The chenna inside should be grainy but the texture must not be hard or coarse. And, of course, the sugar syrup should have just the right amount of sweetness.

Haldirams Gulab Jamun has many things going well for itself. The dumplings are super soft without breaking off into bits inside the tin. The medium-sized dumplings are light, airy and have been dunked into a sugar syrup that also has hints of rose water and cardamom (elaichi). The syrup is not thick and gloopy, which gives the desserts an overall feeling of lightness. More importantly, the syrup is not overtly sugary – the one thing that can sometimes ruin the joy of eating gulab jamuns. The sweetness level is spot on. Though there are instructions on the tin on how to increase or decrease sweetness, we think you may not need to use those at all.

Here’s the clincher – there are no additives or preservatives added. And that’s probably why Haldirams Gulab Jamun tastes like freshly made gulab jamuns. You almost forget this came out of a tin. That’s how good it is.
