Best Rusk Brand For Your Masala Chai – Mishry Reviews

Which is the best Rusk for your morning cup of tea? Amidst so many brands, how do you pick the best? We review six popular brands to arrive at the best tasting, crunchiest rusk for your tea-time.

Rusk is nothing but twice-baked bread. It is hard and crunchy as compared to regular bread, and has a longer shelf life. The longer shelf life is the reason rusks came into being, in the first place. We reviewed 6 brands of rusks, and after a series of taste tests and our very own Mishry Secret Sauce, we can say that Britannia Toastea is our top pick for the rusk that gives you the maximum crunch on dunk!

Mishry Top Pick: Britannia Toastea

Best Rusk Brand For Your Masala Chai – Mishry Reviews

Britannia Toastea Rusk, 200g

Britannia Toastea emerged as our Top Pick for the rusk that tastes best with a hot cup of tea. It is perfectly golden, toasted to perfection for the crunchiest bite. It tastes good as is too, with a mild sweetness towards the end of the bite.

Britannia Toastea soaks just the right amount of tea when dunked. We dipped the top 4 brands from our review (Britannia Toastea, Parle Ealichi, Haldiram’s Special Suji Rusk and Palbis Suji Rusk) in hot tea for 3 seconds each. While all of them became quite soggy, and a couple of them were about to plonk right into the cup, it was Britannia Toastea that retained its crunch, giving the perfect balance of crunch and mush, and making it the tastiest rusk in our dunk-test.

Mishry Top Pick (Runner Up): Parle Elaichi Rusk

Parle’s Elaichi rusk soaked up a lot of chai in a single dunk. As a result, the chai-soaked bite became a bit too soft and soggy for our liking. However, Parle’s Elaichi rusk tastes good and is a premium quality product. It would be enjoyed by those who like their tea & rusk combination to be on the mushy side.

How We Picked Our Brands

As much as rusks are enjoyed in India, it is largely local bakeries and shops that dominate the market. There are a few brands like Parle and Brittania that are helping grow the market. Just like every other review, we like to go for brands that are easily available throughout the nation. These brands often include big-brands that have rather economic product ranges. Some of them include Britannia and Parle, both of which have obviously no need for any introduction. Other brands such as Modern and Haldiram’s also have strong footholds in the Indian market, which made them a great choice for our review.

All the brands we picked were easily available at several locations across Delhi-NCR. These are also easily available for audiences outside the national capital region through major online portals as well.

Who This Is For?

Rusk is enjoyed by everyone, it is in fact one of the most popular delicacies that are enjoyed along with a cup of hot tea. Its toasty flavors when mixed with that strong tea-taste, gives out a creamy texture that preferred by so many. This review is for anyone who likes to dunk a rusk into their chai every morning.

How We Tasted:

Our review of the rusks was based on two separate tasting processes. The first one included a dry tasting, while the other one was our Mishry Secret Sauce was based on the rusk’s taste and crunch after it is dipped into the tea for 3 seconds. Each brand was tasted and judged on the basis of their flavor and crunch, both of which are quite essential when it comes to choosing a right rusk for a great tea-time.

Parameters Considered:

The vital and essential part of reviewing is the setting up of the parameters upon which the test will be based, for only a fixed set of principles can help in the identification of the brand that deserves to be on the top. Here are those parameters:

  • Crunchiness: Crunch is an important factor. Whenever you are dry tasting rusk, or even when you are dipping it into your cup of hot-tea, its crunchiness plays an important role in adding up to its taste.
  • Taste: The toasty taste of rusk is well-loved by all. In fact, different rusks, which are toasted to varying grades, or those that have added flavors like elaichi, provide a different taste-experience.
Brands Crunch Flavor Dunk Test (MSS)
Britannia Toastea V. crunchy Mildly sweet and elaichi flavor Retains crunch, does not become mushy
Parle Real Elaichi V. crunchy Sweet and crunchy Soaks up a lot of tea and becomes mushy
Modern Milk Rusk Crunchy Dry, mildly bitter taste, burnt flavor NA
Palbis Suji Rusk Crunchy Neutral flavor, coarse and dry Coarse
Haldiram’s Special Suji Rusk Crunchy Sweet, milky Becomes soft and mushy
Parle Milk Rusk Crunchy Very dry and milky NA

Result Of The Dry Test

To our satisfaction, most of the rusk brands that we tasted ended up having that desired toasty taste and that balanced crunchiness, which made them a delight to bite into. Brand such as Parle Elaichi, Brittania, Haldiram’s and Palbis qualified for the dipping test. And as for Modern, it had that over-done kind of essence to it which highly suppressed its flavor and added up to its excessive dryness. Parle’s Milk Rusk also did not make it to the dunk-test because of its dryness.

Mishry Secret Sauce

As we had discussed, the Mishry Secret Sauce test was the tea-dipping test. During this test, each brand was separately dunked in a cup of freshly prepared hot tea and kept for 3 seconds. After the process of dipping, each brand was tasted and judged on the basis of the flavor and crunchiness when mixed with tea.

Results Of The Mishry Secret Sauce

It is appropriate to say that Britannia Toastea emerged victorious after the dunk-test, as it soaked the perfect amount of tea, retain its crunch and overall tasted the best across all the contenders. Parle’s Elaichi rusk was also quite tasteful, but, unlike Britannia, Parle’s tea-soaking capabilities proved to be its downfall, for even after being tasteful, it ended up being a bit too soggy for our liking.
