When it comes to any packaged powder mix, taste is one of the most crucial factors that must be considered. Rasam powder is essentially a mix of toor dal, red chillies, asafoetida, pepper, coriander and cumin.

1. Garlic
The first variant that we reviewed was the MTR Minute Rasam Garlic. We ordered the 60 gm pack of the product. This pack includes 4 separate packs of 15 gm each that is ideal for one time use. It was priced at INR 40.
The MTR Minute Rasam Garlic requires no cooking and gets ready with just the addition of hot boiling water. Our review process started with the dry inspection stage. As we opened the pack, the aroma was intense.
The garlic rasam powder had a mix of yellow and brown color. It was free from lumps and we could also see small bits of curry leaf present in the powder. For preparation, we followed the instructions as stated on the pack .
The list of ingredients of the MTR Minute Rasam Garlic mentions the presence of Anticaking agent Silica (INS 551). The main purpose of adding this ingredient is that it prevents the formation of lumps. Further, it also helps increase the shelf life of food products. It is most commonly used in powdered mixes.
We taste the rasam in two different forms – with rice and as a drink. The taste of rasam when served with steaming hot rice was delectable. This variant is loaded with flavors. We felt a strong presence of garlic along with a slight kick of black pepper. The salt levels were well balanced. It was not overpowering.
Talking about the consistency, this variant was neither too thick nor thin like water. However, when we kept the rasam aside for a few minutes, the powder settled at the bottom.

2. Pepper
MTR Minute Rasam Pepper was the second variant that we reviewed. For this review, we ordered the same 60 gm pack that comes for Rs. 40. At first we entirely inspected the powder mix in the dry form.
On opening the pack, there was a strong aroma of mixed masalas, but we couldn’t single out the aroma of black pepper. On observing, there were small bits of curry leaves and dehydrated carrots present in the powder.
Similar to the garlic variant, the list of ingredients of the pepper flavor mentions the use of Anticaking agent Silica (INS 551). We prepared the rasam following the instructions as given on the pack.
This variant has a spicy black pepper kick which tasted delicious. This rasam is tangy and peppery. We loved the inclusion of small pieces of roasted garlic, however the dehydrated carrots weren’t fresh tasting.
