Price and packaging – A pack of 24 individually-packed chikkis is priced at Rs 288/-. At Rs 12 per chikki, this might seem a little steep, especially if you compare it to local kirana store chikkis. Owing to the convenience these individually wrapped chikkis offer, and how easy they are to carry, the price is justified.
Nutritional label – A single 28-gram bar offers 139.7 Kcal with 15.3 grams of carbohydrates (12.6 grams of natural sugar from jaggery), 4.2 grams of protein, and 7.5 grams of fat.
We liked how the brand specified the caloric values per serve.
The main ingredients, as claimed, are peanuts (55%) and jaggery (45%).
Another thumbs up as this is truly devoid of white sugar and preservatives.
Is jaggery better than sugar in the true sense?
This primarily depends on your ‘why’. Are you replacing sugar with jaggery to lose weight?
Then no, jaggery is not better than sugar because both have similar caloric values.
However, if you’re looking to up your iron intake with natural foods, jaggery is a ‘sweet’ option. Moreover, jaggery is recommended to be consumed post-meals as it promotes a quicker release of digestive enzymes.
Peanuts are a plant-based source of proteins and good-quality fats. These fats are heart-healthy and the fiber content in peanuts is another plus.
So far, no complaints. Upon opening a pack, we saw a mix of small and medium-sized peanuts set in a jaggery coating. The brown hue of jaggery was neither too light, nor too deep. Our chikki was cracked from one side, but this wasn’t a deal-breaker as it doesn’t impact the taste.
The peanuts have that crunch roasted nuts do. The jaggery coating was crisp, and together the ingredients had a bold bite. The fact that it wasn’t sticking to the palate indicated that the jaggery had been cooked well.
Taste-wise, we liked the well-rounded sweetness. It was just as we anticipated. However, the peanuts taste slightly stale.
The caramel-like flavor is what sets jaggery apart from other sweeteners. This aspect was missing from the flavor profile as well.
