Price + Packaging
A 100 gm pack is priced at Rs 65/-. It has a shelf life of 12 months. The phirni mix is packed in a pouch which is placed inside a blue and white carton.
Ingredients
The main ingredients include sugar, basmati rice (29%), milk powder, xanthum gum, agar agar, cardamom, and nature identical flavors.
Xanthum gum and agar agar are thickeners and setting agents respectively which are not used in homemade phirnis, where khoya is used and the mix is slow-cooked on a low flame. The rest are authentic ingredients used to make phirni.
Instructions + Cooking
We made the phirni as per the instructions given on the box. The instructions are easy to follow and you only need milk from your pantry.
- Mix the contents of the pack in 500 ml milk
- Boil the milk.
- Stir continuously.
- Simmer for 5 minutes or until the desired consistency.
- Set in serving bowls/earthen bowls.
- Serve.
Make sure you stir continuously, otherwise lumps will start to form.
We did not add any extra sugar and aromatics from top as that would interfere with our testing process. You can add whatever you wish to. We added some pistachios as garnish on top and tasted it directly from the kasora after chilling.
A few observations –
- The rice powder mix has mixed with the milk very well.
- There is no residue of rice lumps in the entire mix.
Traditionally, making a phirni is tedious and lengthy. This helps eliminate soaking and grinding rice, slow-cooking it while stirring continuously and collecting extra ingredients. All you need is milk and some nuts to finish this off with.
A single pack is enough to serve 4-5 people as a dessert. Between cooking the phirni, cooling it and consuming it, there is only a 3-4 hour window.
Taste + Texture
This phirni has a rich, milky flavor with a delicate rose and cardamom background. It has a medium sweetness level, and if you like your desserts on the sweeter side, a little extra might be required.
Although the ‘nature-identical flavors’ added are not mentioned, we think it’s rose as the subtle flavor is indicative.
The aroma is milky sweet with a lingering rose-like fragrance.
We had a few issues with the way this phirni is set. It is definitely not homestyle, in fact it’s set like a jelly. This is set like a pudding, more than a phirni. Homemade phirni is scraped out of a kasroa and is slightly loose, this is extremely tight-set. This has a light, grainy texture of rice. Other than that, this is rich and creamy.
Pros
- Rich, milky and creamy.
- Very fragrant.
- Pleasant rose and cardamom flavor.
- Medium sweetness levels.
- Super convenient.
- Fairly clean ingredient list.
Cons
- The texture needs some improvement in terms of the way it sets.
