Our Review Factors
What were we expecting from Safal Frozen French fries?
A fresh taste, crispy texture, balanced seasoning, and consistency in shape and size were our focus parameters. We also recorded the quality of packaging, the overall convenience, and compared the price to other brands of frozen fries available in the market.
1. Taste
We were looking for fresh-tasting fries that had a balanced salt seasoning.
A common drawback with frozen foods is an overwhelming seasoning or an industrial, heavily processed taste. What was our experience with Safal like?
2. Texture
Smooth like mashed potatoes from inside with a crunchy, crisp exterior- this is the most inviting texture of fries. Here we also gauged the consistency in thickness.
3. Aroma & Appearance
Were all fries similar in shape and size? How did the appearance in terms of color change pre and post-frying?
Did they have the characteristic aroma of potatoes or was it dominant on oil?
4. Other Parameters
We compared the price to other commercially available frozen fries. Moreover, the packaging and shelf life were also checked.
Safal Frozen French Fries – Detailed Review
Price & Packaging
A 400-gram pack of Safal Frozen French Fries is priced at Rs 100/-. It has a shelf life of eight months when stored under -18 degrees. The pack mentions cooking alternatives like frying and baking with detailed instructions. This pack is not resealable.
We compared the prices with other salted frozen French fries and found that Safal is priced competitively.
Main Ingredients
Potato (94%), refined palmolein oil.
While the ingredient list is free of preservatives and other additives, we feel a better source of fat could have been used.
Cooking + Tasting
We fried the Safal Frozen fries for 4-5 minutes in oil at 180 degrees, as instructed. It took marginally longer for the fries to develop a light golden appearance.
We tasted the fries as is to check the seasoning and original flavor and then paired them with Heinz Tomato Twizt ketchup.
Appearance
Out of the pack, the fries had a pale yellow appearance. There were no broken pieces and uniformity was maintained in shape and size throughout the pack.
After frying, they turned a beautiful light golden shade.
Taste & Texture
The texture was the only let-down in our entire experience. The fries were crispy but it wasn’t bold. We liked that the cooked potatoes were fluffy and did not feel chalky or dry.
The potatoes that have a lower starch content, result in a lower crunch. Scientifically, when the starch is low, the potatoes cannot convert starch to sugar which eventually leads to a lower crunch.
Taste-wise, the fries were too good. None of the pieces were hollow or dry. The natural earthy flavor of potatoes was present with a mild, natural saltiness. Even though these don’t have salt as an ingredient, we didn’t feel the need to season them with extra salt from top. There were no artificial or rancid flavors. Moreover, the fries held the ketchup fairly well, no complaints here.
Pros
- These are priced competitively.
- Thumbs for no broken pieces and visual consistency.
- There are no preservatives or additives used.
- The fries are easy to prepare.
- They tasted fresh and had a well-rounded seasoning.
Cons
- The crunch was slightly low.
