Tisow Assam Select Tea Review – Fresh & Flavorful

Rushed mornings or tired evenings, a perfectly brewed cup of chai recharges you like no other. 

If you’re as particular as us when it comes to that cup of chai, you’d agree that the preparation is purely therapeutic. 

Tisow has been in the tea planter space since 1932. We ordered their Single Estate Assam Select variant for our Tisow Assam Select Tea review. This carton holds tea blends from Upper Assam and the North Bank. Are these CTC teas worth the buy?

Our review process was divided into three stages. Black tea (no milk), black tea with milk added after brewing (or boiling), and desi chai (tea leaves brewed with milk and water).

Before we begin, let’s understand what is CTC tea? CTC is produced in machinery where fresh, whole tea leaves are crushed, torn, and curled (CTC). The ground leaves are then rolled into pellets and oxidized. This typically has a bolder flavor in comparison to whole leaves.  

What is Single Estate Tea? Single estate tea means the leaves used are from just one region (state or province) and a single harvest. What makes Assam a naturally blessed region for tea production is the rich and fertile soil. Thanks to the heavy rainfalls and high humidity, the soil in Assam is such premium quality. Moreover, this clay soil is nutrient-dense.

What were we looking for when reviewing Tisow Assam Select Tea?

The quality in terms of packaging, aroma, flavors, and more were the primary parameters of our review. 

1.  Taste

Though the flavor of tea varies from region to region, we were looking for a rich and robust blend as this is labeled as Assam tea which is known for a full-bodied, robust flavor profile. Did Tisow tea feature this? 

As suggested by its name, Assam tea is a black tea variant produced in that region of India. This flavorful blend holds a plethora of nutrient-dense plant compounds that boost immunity, heart, and brain health.

2. Aroma 

Assam tea is loved globally for its strong, robust, and refreshing aroma. Our review highlights the key differences in the aromas of Upper Assam and North Bank teas, if any. 

3. Color + Clarity

Assam blends have a deep appearance with shades of red and brown. Good quality tea has a clear, particle-free appearance. Did Tisow’s Select Tea display this?

The price, packaging, shelf life were recorded under this parameter.

The following section details our experience with two variants from Tisow Assam Select Tea range.

Price + Packaging

In a vibrant purple-blue carton, there are two vacuum-sealed pouches, each holding 250 grams of content. The entire carton (500 grams) is priced at Rs 350/-.

We’d like to highlight how thoughtful the packaging was. Both variants of this tea were packed in double-sealed vacuum pouches that had an aluminum lining. In the box, there was a ziplock bag that you can transfer the tea into. This type of packaging retains flavor, freshness, and aroma. Full marks on packaging.

Aroma + Appearance

This had a refreshing and bold aroma. It was quite desirable. The tea had an amber hue with more red tones than brown. 

Flavor

The tea leaves are very potent, which is why we’d recommend adding just one teaspoon first, then building up if needed. Our chai turned out to be very strong, with just one teaspoon. Make sure you brew it correctly.

The chai we made (all three types) was robust, strong, and with bold flavors.

Aroma + Appearance

The aroma was rich and inviting, even though this is slightly milder in comparison to the first variant. It had a pleasing golden hue without any strands or strains in the cup. This was a clear beverage. 

Flavor

Just like aroma, the flavor and intensity of North Bank were also milder than Upper Assam. This blend was still very potent, just relatively lower than the other variant. We used a teaspoon for 1.5 cups of tea and this quantity was more than sufficient. It gave us the color, aroma, and taste we were looking for.
