We Tried The New Thin Cut Pepper Crunch Fries by McCain

French fries, no one can stop at just a handful.

Achieving those crisp-on-the-outside, long-thin-identical-looking fries involves quite a few steps. From peeling to destarching and deep frying, these steps aren’t ideal when cravings are at an all-time high. And for times like these, we have RTE frozen fries, McCain being one of the first names that pops in our heads. They launched a new variant that we’ll cover in this McCain Pepper Crunch French Fries review.

What were we looking for in McCain French Fries? How did we review them?

Flavors and textures were the primary parameters for this review.

1. Taste

A fresh, natural flavor of potatoes, with a desirable balance between salt and pepper is what we expected. How bold is the pepper flavor?

Does the flavor profile allow these fries to be paired with other dips? 

2. Texture

Labeled as thin cut fries, we checked for the same. These shouldn’t be chunky, but have thin, crunchy bites. Crisp outside with a starchy potato inside – when it comes to fries such a texture is always appreciated. 

Were McCain Pepper Crunch Fries soft throughout or were they dry? 

3. Other Parameters 

Here, we recorded the price, packaging, shelf life, ingredients, and overall convenience.

Price + Packaging 

These fries come in the standard red-green McCain packing. There was no dual packing or tray. One pack holds 420 grams.

Main Ingredients 

Potato (85%), Palmolein oil, Batter (Refined Wheat Flour- (Maida), Iodized salt, Maida Starch, Spices and Condiments (0.7%) (Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Black Pepper, Red Chilli), Thickeners (INS 1422, INS 412), Natural Flavoring Substance are all the ingredients used. 

Per 100 grams, you get 168.2 Kcal with 3.1 g of protein, 27.64 g of carbohydrates, 5 g of fat.

How did we make this?

There are three recommended methods of preparation, as usually is the case for most frozen foods- deep fry, bake, and air fry. We deep fried one batch.

For this, we heated some oil in a pan. Once heated up, we added the fries without thawing, let them turn golden brown, and served them.

Aroma + Appearance 

None of the fries were broken. The pieces were fairly identical in thickness. Compared to the salted McCain fries, these were thinner and longer, as they are labeled ‘Skinny and Crispy’

On opening the pack, we were welcomed by a bold, desirable, and warming garlic aroma.

Taste + Texture

These were yum. These were addictive. We could munch on these endlessly.

McCain Pepper Crunch Fries were a hit. The crunch was bang-on. It was bold and fresh, with the starchy bite of potatoes intact.

As for the flavor, these hit the spot. The salt and pepper balance was beautiful, both were in sync. We quite liked the warming notes of garlic that tie the entire flavor profile together. It was a pleasing upgrade from plain salted fries.
