Wholesome and satisfying! These are the two words that always crop up while talking about upma, especially for breakfast. Upma, uppumavu or uppittu is a popular South-Indian breakfast dish that is easy to make from scratch at home but is also available in a variety of ready-to-eat options.
While we mostly associate the brand Maggi with instant noodles, it has come up with other instant products like Maggi Masala Onion Poha and Maggi Upma. We tried the Maggi Ghee Tadka Upma for its taste, texture, and aroma. Here is what we thought about it.
We conducted a detailed review of the Best Ready To Eat Upma For A Quick Breakfast to find out which one was the tastiest. Out of 6 ready-to-eat upmas, Suhana Upma and Easy Eat Upma were our Top Picks. Read more.

#FirstImpression Of Maggi Ghee Tadka Upma
Price and packaging – A 65-gram pack is priced at Rs 25/- and is sufficient for a single person. Maggi Ghee Tadka Upma comes in the standard Maggi-yellow bag in two sizes – 65 grams and 260 grams (Family pack).
How we made it – The pack gives an optional recipe to make Tomato Upma too, but we tried the basic method provided. We followed the instructions given on the pack. As per the instructions, we emptied the contents of the pack in a bowl and added 90 ml of hot water. We mixed it well, covered it, and let it sit for 4 minutes. The upma was ready to consume. The water quantity and time mentioned is spot on to reach the desired texture.
Appearance – We could see small pieces of carrots, green chilli flakes, mustard seeds and chana dal in the dry mix which provide a colourful appeal.
Aroma – We could get a strong hot of curry leaves (Kadi Patta). We were excited to read ‘ghee’ on the pack and were expecting a distinct ghee aroma, but upon tasting it, we felt there could have been a more robust ghee aroma and flavor. The pack does list ghee as one of the ingredients used (0.9%).
Taste and texture – The first thing we noticed was how each grain of suji had plumped up. The Maggi Ghee Tadka Upma looks nice and fluffy. You get an appetizing bowl of upma, with fluffed up grains of suji and a delicious aroma of kadi patta. The little pieces of fried onion, channa dal, and rai (mustard seeds) add a lovely texture and flavor to the upma.
The Maggi Ghee Tadka Upma can turn into a wonderful, wholesome breakfast or an evening meal. Even though the seasoning is well balanced, the spice levels might be a bit much for the kids.

Overall, we felt that even though the taste was nice and had a lovely texture, the ghee aroma was missing. Having said that, Maggi Ghee Tadka Upma can make for a delicious on-the-go snack, or even a light meal when you are in a rush and don’t feel like ordering in. It is tasty and very reasonably priced too.
