Our Review Factors

What were we looking for in McVities HobNobs Oats biscuits?

The original HobNobs are made using rolled oats and considered a hybrid between flapjack and digestive biscuits. We gauged the taste, texture, and look an attentive glance at the ingredient list.

HobNobs biscuits are a novel product for the Indian market. How did McVities fare?

1. Taste

Oats do not really have a characteristic flavor. This is what makes it versatile. Wholemeal (whole wheat) has earthy flavors. We were looking for freshness and balanced sweetness without any undesirable or rancid flavors. We also checked for balance of sweetness.

2. Texture

Often described as moreishly crunchy, we set out to explore more. Are these biscuits crumbly? Do they have a dense bite? When dipped in a cup of warm beverage, did the cookie break apart or was it relatively firm?

3. Nutrition Quotient

Claims on trans fat and ingredients were checked.

Are these cookies truly devoid of refined flour? Do they really don’t have transfat? What is the primary source of fat used? How are these sweetened? How many calories does one serve offer?

4. Other Parameters

We dug details on the price, packaging, and shelf life here.

The cookies are individually wrapped and placed in a orange and blue carton. Each pack holds two cookies, weighing 30.22 grams, and there are five such packs. This is priced at Rs 65/- and has a shelf life of nine months.

The pack also mentions these are transfat-free and have 0% maida.

Main Ingredients

The main ingredients are Oats (38%), Wheat flour (atta – 21.2%), Edible vegetable oil (palm), Sugar, Invert sugar, Honey, Raising agents (INS 500 (ii), INS 503 (ii)), Wheat bran (1%), Iodised salt.

One pack (two cookies- 30 grams) offer 145 Kcal with 2 grams of protein, 21 grams of carbohydrates, and 6 grams of fat. This makes the cookies as good as a snack, in terms of calories.

Our Verdict

McVities HobNobs are similar in terms of caloric values to other oats-based cookies with slight variations in the macronutrient distribution.

Aroma + Appearance

These biscuits are larger than an average-sized cookie. They have a golden brown surface with some cracks. There is an abundance of oat flakes on top. There was no dominant aroma but nothing odd or undesirable either.

Taste + Texture

Predominantly, these cookies are crunchy. They have a light, fibrous bite. In terms of taste, the sweetness is delicate. Overall, the cookies taste fresh and one pack is fairly filling considering these would be consumed as a mid-meal snack with a cup of coffee or chai.
