Overall convenience, an impressive nutrition profile, certified organic ingredients, a soft texture, and rounded seasoning- were the key parameters of our review.

1. Taste

A common occurrence with ready-to-use products is an unfavorable balance of seasoning. Too much salt, too little spice or vice-versa, how did Organic Tattva Organic Masala Rava Idli mix fare? Are there any other dominant flavors coming from the mustard seeds, curry leaves, and other additions? If yes, are these tasty with/without accompaniments? Does it have an aftertaste? 

Both semolina and rice have a nutty taste. Could our panel of reviewers figure out these idlis are made of a different grain via taste?

Price & Packaging

The powdered mix is packed in a transparent pouch which is further placed inside a carton. All details and instructions are mentioned on the carton. A 200-gram pack is priced at Rs 85/- and has a shelf life of one year. 

Main Ingredients

Semolina (80%), Edible Vegetable Oil (organic sunflower oil), Cashew Nuts, Bengal Gram Dal, Mustard Seeds, Salt.

Allergen information states this contains gluten, cashew nuts, and mustard seeds. Moreover, it has been processed in the same factory as wheat, sesame, and peanuts. 

This product is certified organic by India Organic, USDA Organic, Jaivik Bharat, and FSSAI. 

How we made it?

Following the instructions on the pack, we combined a cup of the mix with a cup of curd. The wet and dry ingredients were gently folded together until it was well-combined and lump-free. This was set aside of 2-3 minutes and followed by adding another ½ measure of curd with some chopped coriander leaves. 

Then we poured this batter into idli plates that were greased with vegetable oil and let it steam. This can take 12-14 minutes depending on the flame, utensil, size of the idli mould, and more. 

Once done, let the idlis cool for a minute before you demould them and serve hot with sambar and chutney. 

Taste & Texture

Before steaming, the rava idli mix had blended in well with the curd and plumped up. We could see a generous quantity of mustard seeds and chana dal. These were well-roasted and added a robust nutty flavor to the bites. We tasted the idlis without any accompaniments (sambar/chutney) first and found they had the perfect softness and fluffy texture. These did not feel dry. 

In terms of taste, the salt was spot-on. No adjustments needed here. The idlis did have a mild flavor of rava but it was not undesirable at all. The chana dal added a lovely crunch to the bite and had a roasted nutty taste. Mustard seeds added a characteristic pungent taste.

Overall, we liked the seasoning and texture. 

We also tried the idlis with MTR chutney powder and this tasted delicious.
