Medu Vada is a popular South Indian fritter that is made using urad dal. This doughnut-shaped food is most commonly enjoyed as a breakfast or a snack. It is crispy on the outside and soft and spongy on the inside. While most South Indians make this snack with hands, there are manufacturers who offer stainless steel medu vada makers to make it easier for those who may not know how to make or shape a medu vada correctly. We decided to try the vada maker and see if it really makes your task easier.

#FirstImpressions Of The Stainless Steel Medu Vada Maker
We made medu vada using the Medu Vada Instant Mix by Haldiram. All we did was add water to the mix and prepare a consistency that could be compatible with the medu vada maker. We made at least 5 attempts to make medu vada in the maker, and surprisingly enough, it didn’t work even once! These attempts included making the batter thick, runny, semi-thick, and smooth, to see if something works out. In all the cases, as soon we pressed the lever down, the batter spread out in the oil, making weirdly shaped vadas. It is not the best product you could use to make medu vadas. In fact, we resorted to making vadas with our hands and those turned out pretty good. This is definitely not for someone who doesn’t know how to make or shape medu vadas at all.
Why This Medu Vada Is A Disappointment
- The medu vada maker stand is useless. As soon as you keep the container on it, it tends to lose its balance; with or without the batter. The stand is not at all sturdy.
- The stainless steel medu vada maker comes with no instruction manual – so if you are a novice, you would never know how to use it.
- The handles of the maker are very sharp. A little pressure while pressing the lever could lead to a bruised/cut finger.
- It just doesn’t seem to work. The batter failed to make a doughnut-like shape, despite the batter being thick, smooth and runny.
- Medu Vada maker is tough to clean. The maker is complicated and you could hurt yourself while cleaning it from the inside.
