Summary

The Health Factory Zero Maida Bread delivers well on its claims. Packed with nutrition, this is definitely a better alternative to traditional white bread. The ingredient list is clean too.

From toasts to sandwiches, the humble loaf of bread is a constant companion in our kitchens. But have you ever stopped to decipher the labels? Confusing terms and hidden ingredients often leave us wondering – is this “atta” bread even made with real atta (whole wheat)? What is the need to add color? The reality is, that bread with misleading labels seems to be the norm.

This is where The Health Factory steps in, offering a refreshing change. Founded by Vinay Maheshwari, their mission is to provide guilt-free, wholesome bread. Their Zero Maida Bread stands out – it ditches maida completely and promises 100% whole wheat flour. But is it just a marketing claim? We put The Health Factory Zero Maida Bread to test, evaluating it across taste, texture, and nutritional value. Devoid of refined flour (maida) and preservatives, can this be a truly healthy alternative to traditional white bread?

Let’s delve into every aspect of our evaluation in this in-depth review of The Health Factory Zero Maida Bread.

Our Review Factors

What are our expectations? We are looking for maida-free bread with a soft texture and a fresh taste.

Here are details of all the review factors set for testing The Health Factory’s Zero Maida Bread:

1. Taste

We expect a different flavor profile in the following aspects:

  • Less sweetness: Whole grain breads will always be lower in sweetness when compared to white bread.
  • More nuttiness: Whole grains in the flour add a pleasant nutty taste.
  • Possibly more yeastiness: Whole grains provide more nutrients for yeast to feed on, potentially leading to a more pronounced yeasty flavor.

Why does bread taste sweet? Simply put, the presence of Amylase in our saliva interacts with the starch of the bread. This is responsible for breaking the starch into simple sugars which lends a sweet taste to the bread. And ofcourse, most commercially available breads add lots of sugar to the bread.

Nutritional Information

Main Ingredients

This bread is made up of – 100% whole wheat flour (aata), multigrain mix (sunflower seeds, soy seeds, sesame seeds, melon seeds, rolled oats, wheat bran), gluten, yeast, vinegar, sunflower oil, cane sugar, salt, cultured wheat flour and THAT’S IT!

On scanning the ingredient list, we did not observe the presence of any colors and other artificial additives.

Nutri Label

Per serving (2 slices), this bread provides 123.08 kcal of energy, 6.76 gm of protein, 22.32 gms of carb, and 0.76 gm of fat.

The carbohydrate content is significantly lower compared to regular white bread (25.3 gm approx.) and the protein content is higher too. Regular white bread has approximately 2.2 grams of protein (2 slices).

To understand the nutritional aspect better, we have a detailed comparison between the ingredients used in white bread and The Healthy Factory’s Zero Maida Bread.

Here’s a breakdown of the ingredients used :

1. White Bread

  • Refined Flour (53%): This is the main ingredient in bread. The process of refining removes most of the fiber, vitamins, and minerals from the wheat kernel, leaving mostly carbohydrates.
  • Sugar: This adds sweetness and calories with minimal nutritional benefit.
  • Wheat Protein, Yeast, Salt: These elements are essential for bread structure and taste.
  • Oils: Provide some healthy fats, but their type isn’t specified.
  • Soya Flour: This helps in adding protein and some nutrients.
  • Preservatives, Emulsifiers, Acidity Regulators, Antioxidants: These are infused as they help extend shelf life and improve texture. However, some may raise health concerns, especially for individuals with sensitive digestive systems.

2. Health Factory Zero Maida Bread

  • 100% Whole Wheat Flour (Atta): Contains the entire wheat kernel, providing fiber, vitamins, and minerals for better nutrition.
  • Multigrain Mix (Seeds & Oats): This helps boost fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Gluten: Responsible for the texture of the bread.
  • Yeast and vinegar: These are essential for leavening and flavor.
  • Sunflower Oil, Cane Sugar, Salt: Provides some healthy fats, sweetness, and taste.
  • Cultured Wheat Flour: Helps fermentation process. May enhance flavor and shelf life.

Looking at the above comparative analysis, The Health Factory Zero Maida Bread takes the front seat here. The use of whole wheat flour brings in many benefits including – better fiber and protein content. The best part? It avoids the use of artificial additives that are present in white bread.

Here’s why whole wheat is better:

Better Fiber Content : This helps in digestion, keeps you feeling fuller for longer, and helps regulate blood sugar.

Rich in Vitamins and Minerals: Whole wheat is a good source of B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and zinc which are essential for various bodily functions.

How did we review this?

We reviewed the zero maida bread in the following ways:

  1. Toasted and untoasted
  2. With and without condiments like butter and jam.
  3. We also paired it with a batch of scrambled eggs.

Our Analysis

All in all, this bread tastes great! Whether you enjoy this in toasted or untoasted form, you will not find any HUGE difference between this and a regular bakery-bought multigrain bread. So don’t expect off-putting flavors at all. This is fresh, and slightly nutty, with a mild sweetness at the end.

When toasted, it feels reminiscent of the toast that you enjoy at a local bakery.

The texture of this bread is soft and extremely pleasant. Unlike other whole wheat bread, this Zero Maida Bread by The Health Factory isn’t dense or heavy. The addition of seeds on the edges adds a nice bite to the bread.

We did notice a mild bitter aftertaste but that is not a major cause of concern. Compared to regular white bread, this one is not high on sweetness. But it has a more balanced sweet taste.

Those who are accustomed to white bread might find this a bit dry or coarse. But those who regularly consume rye/sourdough/multigrain breads will find this to their liking.
