Summary

Char Gaon’s Honey is delicate tasting. It’s clear and has a light golden color. This single origin honey is manually extracted and has received no heat treatment.

It’s true that honey is a gold mine of health benefits, but it’s also true that it’s one of the most adulterated foods in the world. Which is why more and more people are switching to organic, raw honey sourced directly from the farms.

Mirza Fahad, Founder of Char Gaon, is passionate about organic produce and during the 2020 lockdown, he decided to follow it. As a part of our Curated By Mishry series, we reviewed the Lychee Honey by Char Gaon.

More on the brand’s mission, products offered and our review of the lychee honey.

Founder

Char Gaon was founded by Mirza Fahad Beg in October 2020.

Char Gaon’s Journey

Here is what Fahad has to say about the brand’s journey, “Char Gaon’s journey started in October 2020, post the lockdown. I have always been keen to understand and produce organic food and the 2020 lockdown gave me an opportunity to wear the farmers hat along with my old TV producer’s one.

I made multiple trips to Uttarakhand and connected with farmers from Himachal, Kashmir and UP, in search of procuring 100% natural and organic food items. Then I shortlisted the farmers and started supplying goods ranging from Mustard oil, Jaggery, Haldi, Rajma, Unpolished Rice, etc, in Delhi NCR.

After 2 months into sales, I realized the most assured and guaranteed way to deliver my customers 100% natural produce is to grow it myself.

It was then I shortlisted and focused only on honey and started setting up my apiary and planned to produce pure and raw honey from some beautiful locations of India.

And the journey and learning is still on.”

Packaging – The honey arrived securely in a carton. The honey is packed in a glass jar with a premium looking, clean label.

How is this honey produced? Bees that produce this honey are Apis Mellifera, which are the most common species. The bee boxes are then left in a litchi tree orchard to feed and pollinate. They are not fed artificially. The brand only uses manual extraction and packaging techniques. ‘This way we preserve all its nutrients and produce a truly high quality product for our consumer base.’, mentions the pack.

1. Lychee Honey

The lychee honey is light golden in color and is clear. We could not see any free-floating particles in the jar. The color of honey has nothing to do with its purity. The color of honey is largely dependent on the type of flowers the bees have fed on.

Most commercially available honeys are multi-floral. As per the label this honey is single origin. So when a brand says it’s single origin, it means that the bees only fed on just one type of flower. In this case, lychee (litchi).

Char Gaon’s honey is completely raw and doesn’t go through any heat treatment. Unlike commercially available brands, the honey is not extracted immediately. It is left to mature in the hive for a period of 30-40 days which helps the moisture content to reduce naturally. Giving honey any form of heat treatment reduces the nutrient and antioxidant content of the product significantly, explains Fahad.

The honey is thick and drizzles with ease.

So what should it taste like? When asked about the honey’s taste, Fahad said, “Just like two apples never taste the same, our honey would never taste the same throughout different batches. It’s completely natural and we do not treat it in any way to alter the taste or consistency.”

Our batch of lychee honey is delicately flavored. There aren’t bold fruity or floral notes. This is a sweet, thick honey which is pleasant tasting.
