In the long list of dry savoury snacks that us Indians are so fond of, mathris, bhujias and kharis are probably the top three in the running. In an average Indian home, no tea time is complete without a snack tray filled with biscuits to dip in the chai, some namkeen to gorge on and listening to the ‘humaare zamaane mein’ (In our times) tales by the grandparents.

We tried and tasted Haldiram’s mathri for it’s taste and texture. Here is what you should know about these mathris before you buy them.

#FirstImpression Of Haldiram’s Mathri

Price and packaging – The Haldiram’s Mathri comes in a shiny bright pink packaging. The pack says it is resealable, but there was no ziplock on the pack we bought to reseal. It is priced at Rs 45/- for a 200 gram pack.

Aroma and texture – As soon as you open a pack, you get a strong whiff of kasoori methi (dry fenugreek leaves). These mathris are thick and chunky, which is how a mathri should be. Even though there is a significant amount of lot of oil added to these mathris, they aren’t oily to touch.

 Haldiram’s Mathri Review
Haldiram’s Mathri has a dominant kasoori methi and pepper flavor.

Taste – The mathris have a soft bite and are not dry and brittle. It has multiple layers inside, making it a lovely airy bite. You can taste the kasuri methi and a hint of black pepper. Thankfully, it is not too spicy making it kid-friendly too (That is, if they like eating mathris in the first place).

Haldiram’s Mathri comes with a mix vegetable pickle which is quiet tasty and well balanced. The mathris are quite flavorful as it is and of course the pickle is a bonus.

It’s peppery flavor is quite robust and these mathris make for an excellent travel snack.

Needless to say, Haldiram’s Mathri is meant for occasional snacking, and may not be healthy for daily munching.
