Summary

The batter is easy to mix in water. The pakodas are soft, fluffy and spongy. For anyone who likes lesser seasoning, these pakodas will be perfect. If you like your pakodas spicy, then you can add more seasoning to it. Overall, this product saves a lot of time, and makes amazing pakodas that you can enjoy with your tea!

Come rain or shine, pakodas are a loved Indian snack. Pakodas are mainly batter-coated vegetables that are made using besan (gram flour) and various spices. While we all love munching on some crunchy pakodas, they can get very oily on the surface and ruin the overall experience. Enter, the Low-oil Absorb Pakoda Mix by Tata Sampann.

We tried this mix by making aloo and pyaaz pakodas in our test kitchen. Does the ‘low absorb’ tag do anything for the pakodas’ oil-absorbing property? Moreover, is the batter tasty? And did it make tasty pakodas? Here is what we found out in our quick review and #FirstImpression.

Have you read our big besan review? After testing seven top besan brands in India, and frying several batches of pakodas over a week, we found the best besan brand for the crunchiest pakodas. Read our review and tell us if you agree!

#FirstImpression and Review Of Tata Sampann Low Oil Absorb Pakoda Mix

Price and packaging – The Tata Sampann Low Oil Absorb Pakoda Mix comes in a pouch packing that is attractively designed. A 180-gram pouch of this pakoda mix is priced at Rs 70/-. The pack is not re-sealable.

Ingredients – Besan (62%), rice flour, salt, red chilli powder (2.5%), compounded asafoetida and raising agent.

How we tested these – We followed the instructions as per on the pack to make the batter. The batter was very easy to make and no lumps formed. Even though the pack mentions that it is ‘ready in 15 minutes’, it took us even lesser time to make pakodas. We used medium-thick slices of onions and potatoes to make the pakodas. The pack mentioned the ratio in which the water and premix are to be put together.

We followed this as per instructions and got a vibrant, lump-free, thick batter. The batter coats the pakodas evenly and did not slide off. It sticks to the vegetables really well. We deep-fried the pakodas in refined vegetable oil and We tasted them with our Top Pick from our imli chutney review – Maggi Imli Pichkoo and also with Veeba’s Truly Tomato ketchup, that we reviewed recently.

Deep frying our pakodas

The outcome – The pakodas came out very light, fluffy, and spongy. The pakodas were not very crunchy or crispy. As noticed in our besan review as well, the Tata Sampann Besan made a batch of tasty pakodas with a nice channa-dal flavor but they weren’t as crunchy as our Top Pick. The dominant heeng (asafoetida) flavor and mild salt levels are very pleasing. Some people who like their pakodas on a more chatpata side might require some additional chaat masala and salt.

Now coming to the main aspect – Is it low oil absorb as compared to our regular besan? Yes, to quite an extent. These weren’t exceptionally oily or dripping with oil as we sometimes experience with our usual pakodas. We did not have to dab them on tissue like we usually do. We did experience a less oily surface of the pakodas as claimed.
