Our Review Factors
A toasty, nutty aroma, balanced sweetness, crisp exteriors with a soft, cakey bite- these were the parameters we gauged Wingreens Farms Eggless Crispy Waffle Mix across.
1. Taste
Since pancakes and waffles are typically made using the same batter, the key difference between their flavors is that the latter has a more developed toastiness owing to the way the batter is cooked. (This is because waffles are crisp on the outside, whereas pancakes are supposed to be spongy and fluffy).
Since this is a sweet waffle mix, we looked for balanced sweetness and overall freshness.
2. Texture
Eggless baking results in denser bites, as compared to baking with eggs. The yolk lends fluffiness leading to an overall lighter dessert.
What was the texture of these waffles like?
3. Main Ingredients
How similar are the ingredients compared to a homemade waffle batter? After scanning the ingredient list, can we say this is a good alternative to making waffles from scratch?
4. Convenience
How many ingredients would you need from your pantry? Mixability, spreadability, taste- all combined, is this a convenient fix?
5. Other Parameters
Price
Competitive or economic? Would you be better off preparing the batter yourself?
Packaging
Pouch or container? Is the packaging resealable? How to store the pack if only half the contents are used?
Shelf Life
Since wheat flour is a natural preservative, we expected a shelf life of upto a year. After checking the labels, what did we find?
Wingreens Farms Crispy Waffle Mix – Detailed Review
Price & Packaging
Inside a bucket-shaped plastic container, a sealed poly pack holds 250 grams of the waffle mix. It is priced at Rs 199 and has a shelf life of nine months.
Main Ingredients
Wheat flour, sugar, edible vegetable oil (sunflower oil), dextrose, milk solids, raising agent (INS 500 (II)), acidity regulator (INS 541 (I)), emulsifier (INS 471), and iodized salt.
Sunflower oil is a relatively decent source of fat, no complaints here. Dextrose is a sweetener that works fairly well in baking when combined with other sweeteners. It is not a direct substitute. Dextrose adds that browning effect to the baked desserts.
Per 100 grams, this waffle mix offers 351 Kcal, 65.4 grams of carbohydrates (of which 32.4 grams is sugar), 8.6 grams of protein, and 4.6 grams of fat.
How we made it?
The brand mentions mixing 200 grams of the mix with 50 grams of oil and water. Once a flowy, batter-like consistency is achieved, pour it in a preheated waffle iron and let it cook for 5-6 minutes.
Once cooked and cooled, top with butter, honey, maple syrup, chocolate, fruits, etc.
We tasted the waffles as is and with some Hershey’s chocolate syrup. We used this mini waffle iron to test this mix.
Taste & Texture
While the waffles were baking, they emitted a pleasing vanilla aroma that was sweet and mildly floral. The texture of these waffles was spot-on. They developed a crisp brown exterior with an airy, cakey bite in the center. Despite being an eggless mix, the waffles had risen well. The sweetness was well-rounded, it wasn’t overwhelming. The overall taste allows for adding a variety of toppings.
Pros
